Manufacturing entrepreneurship

Do you want to know about Entrepreneurship?

Have you ever wondered how Entrepreneurship can be connected with the course you are studying?

I too had the same question for a long time. During one of our ALUMINI interactions, I found an answer to it. Yes, I am Janani S , a first year BE Manufacturing student at the college of Engineering Guindy Chennai. I have a great interest in learning about Entrepreneurship in the field of manufacturing. While studying, analyzing and exploring the field we study is our primary responsibility. Generally , manufacturing can be considered a field that does not attract much attention from everyone. In such a field, I had the opportunity to Interview a personality who is excelling remarkably.

He is Mr.Karthik Uthaya Kumar - Director at Servo Hydraulics Pvt Ltd. Servo Hydraulics Pvt Ltd is a leading manufacturing company that provides Hydraulics Machinery and Industrial Automation Solutions. The company delivers various industrial solutions through Quality, innovation, and Advanced Technology.

I was also curious to learn more about this field. I was interested in knowing about this journey and experiences. The first question I asked him was, “What does an entrepreneur mean from your perspective?” He replied that entrepreneurship is about starting with something we know and overcoming the obstacles that come along the way. He said that entrepreneurship is a lifestyle where all skills come together as one. There is no specific domain for entrepreneurship, because an entrepreneur becomes everything. “It’s not one thing, it’s everything,” he said. He further mentioned that even conducting interviews like this can make someone an entrepreneur. This idea surprised me. At that moment, I understood one thing clearly — “EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED.” Even the things we think are unrelated are connected to one another in some way. Just like this article, which connects you and me, even though we may not know each other. I continued with my next question: “What kind of skills should a manufacturing student learn to become an entrepreneur?” He replied, “While studying, focus deeply on your subjects. Don’t study only for exams — learn how to apply them in real life. That itself will show you the path towards entrepreneurship.” He also said that, in today’s world, manufacturing entrepreneurship can become more effective through new technologies. He advised students to concentrate on emerging technologies and understand engineering in a complete and practical way. I asked him why salary and value in manufacturing are often considered lower compared to other fields. He explained that, unlike students in other domains, many manufacturing students do not study their subjects with clarity and purpose. Because of this confusion, their four years of education often go to waste. He also emphasized that India can achieve greater growth in Manufacturing through skilled engineers, innovation, and strong industrial development , we need a large number of skilled manufacturing engineers. At present, he mentioned that there is especially high demand for manufacturing in the agriculture sector. At that moment, one question came to my mind — why did the entrepreneur compare India with China? What is special there in China that is not in India? This was the answer I found through my research. China became strong in manufacturing because of its advanced infrastructure, skilled workforce, faster industrial growth, and strong focus on practical engineering and innovation. Compared to India, China has built a more connected manufacturing ecosystem with better factories, supply chains, and technology support. Students should learn and improve skills such as problem-solving, basic technical knowledge, communication skills, and networking. Entrepreneurship is a mindset. The willingness to practically try even a small idea and the habit of continuously learning are the most important foundations of a good entrepreneur — this is what I learned from this interview. Do you know that soap bubbles played a role in inspiring Einstein’s theory of relativity? Do you know that the same process behind mustard seeds crackling in oil while cooking is also involved in launching rockets into space? Start observing everything around you today. Connect different ideas and bring out new innovations. Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my mentors and teachers who guided me throughout this journey Special thanks to Ragavi Ramakrishnan Mentor at ilayathalaimurai for guiding this article in the right direction, and Sincere Thank you to Tamil Anna and Gayathri Akka mentor at ilayathalaimurai for helping me publish it professionally. I also thank Ragu Ramakrishnan, founder of Ilayathalaimurai, for creating this wonderful opportunity. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to respected professor Suresh Babu Sir for giving me the opportunity to interview alumni members. Finally, I thank Karthik Uthaya Kumar Sir Director at Servo Hydraulics for patiently answering my questions on manufacturing and entrepreneurship and for sharing his valuable guidance. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ilayathalaimurai and all the mentors who supported and guided me in successfully completing my article journey.
